Maths

Rationale

At Newhall Park we aim for all pupils to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics and develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of numbers and the number system. Children are prepared for mathematics they will encounter in the next stage of their education and life beyond school. They reason mathematically using mathematical language, and can explain their mathematical reasoning verbally and written. Enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning are promoted through practical activity, exploration and discussion. As a school we wholeheartedly reject the claim that some people “can’t do” maths – in truth, everyone can.

Maths at Newhall Park provides the opportunity to:

  • Develop secure conceptual understanding along with factual and procedural fluency.
  • Become confident mathematicians, inspired by a love of ‘number’ and problem solving.
  • Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems.
  • Make links across all elements of the mathematics curriculum, in addition to the primary curriculum as a whole.
  • Succeed academically and be prepared for mathematics encountered in every-day life/occupations beyond school.

Maths Vision

Mr Bean ‘I thoroughly enjoy leading maths in primary school because it allows me to engage with young minds and foster a love for learning that can last a lifetime. Maths is a subject that often sparks curiosity, and I find it rewarding to guide students through the process of discovery and problem-solving. When a student experiences that “aha” moment—when a concept clicks or a difficult problem is solved—it brings me immense satisfaction. This moment not only boosts their confidence but also instills a sense of accomplishment.’

Mr Conway ‘Mathematics has been a lifelong passion of mine, starting with solving puzzles and playing chess in my school days, and still now I enjoy tackling tricky Sudoku puzzles as an adult. Supporting the leading of maths at Newhall Park allows me to share this enthusiasm with pupils. I take great joy in seeing children begin to reason and think for themselves, finding innovative solutions to maths problems. I aim to instil a love for problem-solving that can last a lifetime and help to lay the foundations for pupils’ future success in mathematics and beyond.’

Curriculum Information

At Newhall Park, our maths curriculum is built using a combination of White Rose Maths and NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation resources, which provide a strong, research-informed foundation. Teachers then skilfully adapt and sequence these materials to design a bespoke curriculum that meets the needs of our pupils, ensuring key concepts are revisited, built upon, and explored in depth.
