Rationale
At Newhall Park, we recognise that writing is such an important form of communication and it is an essential part of our everyday life. Because we know this, we are committed to empowering our pupils to grow into writing experts for life, capable of expressing themselves thoughtfully and articulately across a variety of genres.
In order to achieve this, our writing curriculum develops pupils’ competency in both composition and transcription. We believe in every writer, there is a reader. So, our curriculum is driven by the use of outstanding models of first-class writing across fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts from The Power of Reading at the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) and supplemented with high-quality visual literacy materials. Through adaptive first-class quality teaching, we take a rigorous approach to the teaching of punctuation, grammar, spelling and handwriting so our learners can embed their skills and knowledge in writing and become fluent and accurate writers.
By embedding learnt skills and knowledge in writing, we aim to develop robust and confident writers who understand the importance of evaluating and editing their own writing and that of others.
‘If you enable a child to become a writer you have given them a voice.’

Writing Vision
Mrs Farooq ‘I loved writing when I was younger but dreaded writing at school; I didn’t connect with it at all. In the years up to me becoming writing lead, I realised that writing was such an important form of communication and an essential part of our everyday life. When you become a writer, you have a voice. As writing lead, I want to give our pupils the opportunity to find their voice through writing and be able to express themselves thoughtfully and articulately and I want to do it properly. Therefore, considerable investment has been made and continues to be made so that our pupils have access to high-quality, rich texts that open up a world of diverse characters and perspectives, representing different communities and experiences. The writing curriculum has been deliberately and passionately developed to excite and enthuse our pupils to care about their writing and empower them to grow into robust and confident writing experts for life. And now, I love writing in school.’
